Have a piece, won't you?

It is Saturday again, time for the weekend mood to set in and to help you along the way we have this freshly baked Apple round-up just for you. Apple has had a great week. Things went uphill from the very start when they reported their (through the roof) Q3 earnings and then we had the roster of new Macs to savour.

The rest of the week has been pretty small compared to those two things but they have been large enough to carry us through the entire week. And make no mistakes, we will still be hearing about the new Macs two weeks down the line and may be more.

Get to the other side for your piece of this delicious pie.

New iMacs, Now With Quad-Core Goodness

iMac

In case you have missed it, we have just had a huge new product line refresh from Apple. Hence we have a lot of new things to reckon with and the most exciting of them all are the new iMacs.

Apple has made sure that no one gets to complain about the amount of processing power and screen real estate that they get from these new iMacs till the next refresh. Three out of the four new iMacs have 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processors. The 4th one is the 2.66GHz Core i5 toting quad-core iMac that we have been hearing about. I mean we’ve been hearing about the quad-core part. You can upgrade the thing to Core i7 at 2.8GHz.

4GB RAM is standard across the board and 500GB is the lowest storage and the three top models all have 1TB storage standard. RAM is a maximum of 8GB with the 21” models and 16GB on the 27” models.

Plus $16 gets you the new upgraded Aluminum Apple remote. The wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse combo comes as standard with every model.

New MacBook [White]

MacBook [White, Oct '09 Update]

The New MacBook gets minor redesigns plus a whole new chassis. It now has the unibody design but in white polycarbonate. Besides, plastic is molded into shape anyway. The sharp edges are now gone (a personal peeve of mine) and have been replaced with rounded edges.

The display is now LED backlit and hence earth-loving and more energy-efficient. It has gotten the glass trackpad like the MacBook Pro models and also the integrated battery, which is rated at 7hours of juice. So what you are looking at is basically a white plastic MacBook Pro without as much power as its Aluminum brothers.

New Multitouch Wireless Mouse And Wireless Keyboard

Magic Mouse Bluetooth Multitouch Gestures SupportedApple now has a wireless keyboard and a multitouch wireless mouse. As you can tell, the mouse is much more interesting.

The new Magic Mouse is a smooth piece of gear. It is a Bluetooth, aluminum housed mouse that has optical tracking, which enables it to track on almost any surface. What is more interesting is the fact this mouse has no physical controls. Instead, it has a multitouch surface and when you click it, the entire surface clicks with it – just like a MacBook Pro glass trackpad in mouse shape.

The mouse supports two-button mouse emulation, 360-degree scrolling and gestures. Apple says that one set of AA batteries will last you for months. And do I even have to say this – it looks über cool.

Apple Wireless Keyboard

Oh – and the keyboard is a full keyboard and it is Bluetooth too. Does it work with the iPhone? Not yet.

New Mac Minis And A Server Too

Mac Mini

Mac Minis got updated as well. They are slightly faster, have slightly bigger storage and they have a new sibling – the Mac Mini Server. The server edition is nothing but the higher Mac Mini without the DVD burner and with two 500GB HDDs. The Server comes with Snow Leopard Server.

Google Chrome for Mac Developer Preview

google-chrome-os

Good news – Google Chrome is finally available for the Mac OS. Bad news – it is only a developer preview. Good news again – that means the public release can’t be too far behind. This is like seeing distant palm trees instead of unforgiving sand everywhere. [read]

Verizon Testing CDMA iPhone On 4G LTE Network [?]

iphone-4g-on-verizon-lte3

Rumor has it that Verizon has been testing out a CDMA iPhone on its 4G LTE network and it will soon be carrying the next version of the iPhone.

In that case, is that juvenile ‘iDon’t’ ad campaign meant to be an elaborate eyewash? Is it a huge corporate conspiracy/plan that we will one day get to know about in “iPhone: The Movie”? Would you watch such a movie? [read]

New Apple Get A Mac Ads – Broken Promises And Two More

As you would expect from Apple, the company has launched three new Ads that are specifically targeted at the Windows 7 launch. The most damaging of the lot has to be the ‘Broken Promises’ ad where progressive flashbacks show PC promising the same thing (not gonna have the problems of the previous OS) with each new OS release.

A lot of people say that they are getting tired of these ads but we all know that they work wonders for the general crowd. [watch]

Report States iPod And iPhone Might Take Over Handheld Gaming

DFC intelligence reports that if the current sales growth trends continue, then the iPhone and the iPod Touch might soon overtake the other handheld devices. We all know that that’s what Apple wants but toppling the PSP or the DS would be pretty a tough job. However, if killer new games arrive on iPhone OS, Apple might win after all. [read]

Boot Camp Will Support Windows 7 By The End Of The Year, But Not For Everyone

Microsoft has shared the Windows 7 development with a lot of people but it can be held for certain that none of that sharing has been with Apple. But that is no reason for Apple to be unable to bring out Boot Camp support for Windows 7 on all the Macs right now. Especially when the betas and RCs were so easily available prior to release.

So it is clearly a business maneuver on Apple’s part. They will eventually support Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate editions but even then you will have to have newer machines and at least OS X 10.6.

Sorry Leopard guys, you have to be white and spotted to join this party. Dalmatians not allowed.  [read]

Apple Wants Patent For Future Ad-Supported Version Of OS X

Apple has filed for a patent for what looks like an ad-supported version of the OS X operating system. Well, I guess if it is as subtle and contextual as the Google Ads, we might get used to it. But too much accuracy can become really creepy sometimes, you know? [read]

Psystar’s Rebelt EFI Will Allow PCs To Run Snow Leopard For $50

PsyStar, the completely crazy company that supplies us with endless Apple related WTF material, has done it again. After failing to gain much traction with their Darwin Universal Boot Loader for OEMs, they have now made the Rebel EFI. This piece of software allows you install a variety of modern OS’s on your machine, including OS X, for $50. PsyStar will even help you to do it and all it asks is that you obtain your copy of the OS you are using legally. [read]

Nokia Sues Apple

nokia-vs-iphone

Nokia has sued Apple and has issued a very vague statement about why it’s doing so. Apparently, iPhone is using a technology to run UMTS, 3G, etc. that can only be licensed from Nokia. And Apple either did not ask them at all or the companies could not come to a deal. Whatever it is, Apple now has another lawsuit to deal with. But the vagueness might mean that Nokia is not completely sure about this either. [read]

Microsoft Mocks App Store For Having Too Many Apps! [WTF?!]

Microsoft used to mock the OS X for not having nearly as many applications as Windows has. Now Apple has 75,000+ apps in their App Store and Microsoft has about 100 apps in their Windows Mobile Marketplace.

Instead of trying desperately to catch up (which they actually doing), they release an ad showing two white-coats mocking Apple for allowing useless apps into the App Store to inflate the numbers. Microsoft apparently allows only the serious apps into their store. Sure Redmond, we believe you. Ahem, not.

Apple Sales Continue To Grow Through Q3 ‘09

This has been one of the biggest Apple stories this week and month. Apple has grown around 12% year on year in Q3 this year and it looks like Q4 is going to be another great quarter for it. So despite the bad economy, Apple is raking it in like nobody’s business. [Apple’s report] [analysis]
